Dark Beer Mile
One mile route
One Mile
Over the course of one mile, you will consume the darkness, or be consumed by it. Four quarters stand between you and the light. Four times the dark will be consumed. Four times you will be measured.
The First Measure
Before you run, you will be tested. The potion must be dark, for it has forgotten what sunlight looks like.
The Quarter
Once the dark is in you, the quarter begins. A quarter mile stands before you.
The Reckoning
At the quarter's end, you are measured again. Another reckoning. You will be tested four times, four quarters, one mile, until there is nothing left to pour and nowhere left to run.
Should You Fail the Measure
Should the darkness rise back up before you cross the line, should you be measured, and found wanting, one more quarter shall you perform. The penalty lap forgives nothing.
The Last Light
Cross the line standing, and the night remembers your name. Cross it any other way, and the night remembers that too.
One night
One Night
On the darkest night of the year, the ritual is performed. The solstice does not ask permission. It simply arrives: the longest dark, the shortest day, the year at its lowest ebb. Every culture that has watched the sun retreat has built something to call it back. This is ours.
The Bargain
Each year, on the darkest night, the same bargain is struck. We give the night what it wants: four quarters, four pours, everything we've got. In exchange, we ask for one thing back. Give us another year. Not a good year. Not an easy one. Just another. Another solstice to stand at. Another mile to run. Another chance to be measured and not found wanting.
It Must Be the Darkest Night
Run it in summer and it's just a beer mile. Run it on the darkest night and it's a reckoning, the dark at its deepest, the light as far away as it ever gets. No other night will do. It has to be this one.
The Return
Someone has to finish first. Someone has to be the one who carried the bargain across the line. When the winner crosses, the ritual is complete, the night has had its due, and the light begins its slow return. Not because of luck. Because someone stood at the darkest point of the year and did not stop. That is what it means to win the Dark Beer Mile. You didn't just run a mile. You brought the light back. One night. The darkest night. The bargain kept.
Poured in darkness
Poured in Darkness
To bring back the light, we must consume the dark.
The Only Potion
It must be dark, anything that has forgotten what the sun looks like. Skip the lager. It need not present itself. The ritual has no use for anything pale, anything light, anything of the sun. Dark is the only sacrifice it accepts.
The Measure
The vessel must hold no less than 355ml, and the dark within it no less than 5% by volume.
The Vessel Itself
It must come in a can. A bottle cannot contain the dark.
The Fifth
Bring four, and you bring exactly enough to fail. The wise bring five. Should the darkness rise back up before you cross the line, the penalty lap demands its own measure, and it will not wait while you find one. Come with a spare, or come prepared to owe more than a lap.
One potion. One measure. Five, not four.
